John Burton

“Art is a universal language,” comments John Burton. And
indeed, he should know, having traveled worldwide, to such places as the
South Pacific, Eastern and Western Europe, Scandinavia, and Latin
America. Painting is much like a combination of scientific
discovery and poetry. Learning about each culture and how light
affects different landscapes is a lifelong pursuit for John. “Each day
I work to train my eye, mind, and heart to take off a little more of the
veil from my eyes so I can see the world more clearly.”
|
While he counts among his
major influences Russian Impressionists such as Nicolai Fechin, American
Illustrator Dean Cornwell, Spanish artist Joaquin Sorolla and Norway’s
noted sculptor Gustav Vigleand. He comments that even though these
influential artists speak different languages we all share a visual one.
John goes to great
lengths to become more fluent in art. Having lived his whole life in the
West he always enjoys coming home, John graduated from Arizona State
University and continued his formal education at the Academy of Art in
San Francisco to study oil painting.

|
Whether it’s a figurative work of a festival in Chile or a plein air
oil of a majestic mountain scene for the Rocky Mountain Plein Air
Painters of which he is a member, John’s paintings are always filled
with life, light, and color. The depth of feeling he inspires with
his brushes has won him many accolades. He has been a major award
winner at the past two Oil Painters of America National exhibitions, won
Best of Show at the Art Splash National Show, and has been a major prize
winner in the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society National show.
|
|
Collectors and art critics
from across the nation appreciate his work. Art Talk calls his
work “must see” and The Arizona Republic named him one of the 5
artists to watch in 2004! Southwest Art has profiled him
twice, most recently in the September 2004 issue and he was featured in
the 2003-04 Artbook.

A much sought after teacher
as well, John has taught workshops in California, Hawaii and Arizona.
Today John resides in Phoenix and teaches at the Scottsdale Artists’
School where he is also the cofounder of Art of Triumph, an organization
formed to organize, award, and promote artists with disabilities. |
